Avi Yona (Bambi) Bueno was born in 1955 in Tel Aviv.
After his military service, Bueno began designing lighting for rock concerts and discotheques in Israel. In 1982, he moved to Britain and worked, among others, with The Cure, Mike Oldfield, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Meatloaf, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Miles Davis. Upon his return to Israel, he resumed his work with various local artists, bands and theaters, including the Cameri Theater, Habima, Gesher Theater, Beersheba Theater and Haifa Theater. He became the resident designer of Rina Yerushalmi’s Itim Ensemble. He also designed lighting for many Israeli Opera productions, including the huge productions in Masada. Most importantly, he designed lighting for many dance performances in Israel and abroad, including Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, Paris Opera Ballet, Cullberg Ballet, Carte Blanche, NDT, Royal Danish Ballet, Basel Ballet, Helsinki Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal (GBCM), as well as the Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak Dance Company, and Sharon Eyal and Gui Behar’s L-E-V troupe.
Since 1990, Bueno has been Batsheva’s resident designer. He designed lighting for many Batsheva dances, including: KYR, What’s Left, Sinking of the Titanic, King of Wara, Black Milk, 60 A Minute, My Little Garden Party (1990); Passomezzo, Queens of Golub, Arbos (1991); Mabul, Stone Soup, Stopping Jordan (1992); Anaphase, Perpetuum (1993); Tra-La-La (1994); Zina, Kaamos (1995); Two Short Stories (1997); Quotations 1-9, Moshe (1999); When the Rooster Crowed the Green Bride Floated through the Village Square, Soof (Typha, Reeds), The Rest (2000); Naharin’s Virus (2001); Love, Mamootot (2003); Quiet Village (2004); Three, TELOPHAZA (2005); MAX (2007); Project 5, Makarova Kabisa, Bo/lero (2008); Bill (2010); Sadeh21 (2011); HOUSE (2012); The Hole (2013).
His works for the Batsheva Ensemble included designs for Butterfly Effect, Love of the Seven Dolls, King Ubu (1991); Dance Party (1994); Zachacha (1998); Plastelina (2001); George & Zalman (2006); Seder, Shula (2007). Bueno won the Israeli Theater Award for Best Lighting 11 times in 1995-2010. He also won the Yair Shapira Award for developing a unique medium for the dance world (1993), a commendation in the Moshe Halevi Performing Arts Prize Competition (1996) and Disney’s Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement (2008).
