David Dvir was born in 1949 in Kibbutz Nahsholim.
Dvir studied in the Nitzanim Youth Village and Zionist Youth Farm in Jerusalem, as well as the Physical Education College in Beersheba. In 1972, after his military service as a platoon commander and physical training officer in the Paratroopers Brigade, he began studying in the Bat-Dor Studio, and throughout the first half of the 1970s he performed as a dancer in the Israeli Ballet Company and in Bat-Dor. He also performed in the films Jesus Christ Superstar and Kazablan.
He joined Batsheva in 1976, and danced with the company until 1989, with leading roles in many works, including Voices (1977); Stravinsky Dance Circus, Daughters of Shiloh, Wilderness, Swamps & Forest (1979); Ties, Rhapsody, Nymphaeas (1980); An Ancient, Tale In Common (1981); The Foreigner, Transformation (1982); Inostress, My Sole… and Head (1983); Heavenly Choirs, Square Button (1986).
In 1982 he was appointed as the company’s artistic director, and served in that capacity until 1989. During those years, Dvir maintained a balance between Israeli choreographers and choreographers commissioned from abroad. The Israeli choreographers who worked with the company included Siki Kol, Tamar Ben Ami, Haim Ohn, Alice Dor Cohen, Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal, Amir Kolben, and Ohad Naharin. Choreographers commissioned from abroad included Robert North, Daniel Ezralow, Robert Cohan, Doug Varone, and David Parsons. Dvir also initiated the “Thursdays in Batsheva”, which offered dance samples with explanations designed to bring the public closer to the art of dance, as well as the “Day of Dance” for schoolchildren.
In 1989, Dvir was appointed coordinator of the dance program in the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts, a position he holds to this day. In addition, he creates dance programs for high school students. Dvir was a member of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality’s Arts Council. In 1993, he was the artistic director of the Curtain Up (Haramat Masach) annual festival of dance premiers. In 2005-2007 he was a referee in the three seasons of the Born to Dance reality show on Channel 2.
Dvir won the Yair Shapira Dance Award (1980), the Kinor David Award (1981) and the Cylinder Award of Omanut Laam (NGO to promote art in Israel geographic periphery) (1989).
