Hadassah Baduch

Hadassah Baduch (1933-)

Dancer. Born in Yemen, she immigrated to Israel as an orphan in 1949. She was educated in the Shfeya Youth Village, and studied modern dance with Gertrud Kraus, Arie Kalev, and Elsa Dublon. In 1954, she was admitted to Inbal Dance Company where she danced as a solo for six years. During that period, she studied the Graham technique with Rena Gluck. In 1960, she received a scholarship and moved to New York. During her four-year stay there, she studied technique in Martha Graham’s studio and choreography with Louis Horst, as well as Indian dance and classical ballet. She performed in musicals, danced in Sophie Maslow’s company and was an understudy dancer in Martha Graham’s Dance Company.
Upon ending her studies in 1963, Batsheva de Rothschild invited her to join the founding members of Batsheva, together with other Israeli dancers who studied in New York at the time, such as Ahuva Anbari and Shimon Levi. In the company’s first season, Baduch danced in Celebrants, Fun & Fancy, Errand into the Maze, Learning Process, and The Pass.
At the end of her first season with Batsheva, Baduch left the company and returned to New York, where she continued her dancing and teaching activity. She taught modern dance, choreography and yoga at the City University of New York and the local Jewish Community Center, established a dance company of her own and performed on stage and on TV.
