Maya M. Carroll (née Lipsker) was born in 1978 in Haifa.
She studied at the local WIZO High School of the Arts. She began her professional career as a dancer in Muza Dance Company (1997-2000).
In 2000-2003, Carroll danced with Batsheva Ensemble and took part in the original cast of Kamuyot (2003). Between 2000 and 2002 she choreographed three dances as part of Batsheva Dancers Create: Nina (duet, 2000); Urbania (trio, 2001); Monada (trio, 2002). She began teaching Ohad Naharin’s Gaga to Batsheva dancers as well as other students.
In 2004, Carroll created her first independent choreography, Bruno (duet), for Tmuna Theater’s Intimadance Festival, and was invited to take part in a research project with choreographer Sasha Waltz in Berlin. In 2006 she danced with Julyen Hamilton’s Allen’s Line Company and began teaching and creating in Europe. In 2007, she co-created Shlomot together with Irish composer and musician Roy Carroll. Ever since then, the two have been collaborating and created more than 15 works by now, including Almost There, Hide, Transforma (2010); Magic Valley, Undergrowth (2011); Exercise (2012); Dreadnought, Snake (2013).
In 2011, the two created the Instrument, an art collective based in Berlin. The Instrument is a research and creative vehicle based on collaborative work with artists from the dance, music and plastic arts areas. It has toured Europe, Israel, Canada and Brazil.
