Moshe Romano (1936-2014)
Dancer and teacher. Born in Israel. After his military service, Romano began studying classical ballet in Mia Arbatova’s studio, and later Spanish dance in Spain. Upon his return to Israel, he studied with Rina Schenfeld, Rena Gluck and Rina Shaham, and performed in their companies, as well as in the Israeli Opera Ballet under Edis de Philippe and other musical theater productions. In 1962, he joined Anna Sokolow’s Lyric Theater Company.
In 1963, Moshe was admitted to Batsheva together with its first founding members. He danced in Luna Park / An Excursion, Celebrants, Fun & Fancy, The Learning Process (1964); The Mythical Hunters, Tent of Visions, Nocturne, Saraband (1965); Psalms, Side Show, The Betrothal (1966); Voices of Fire, Reflections, Blind Man’s Buff (1967); Rehearsal!… (?), The Road of the Phoebe Snow, Come and Get the Beauty of It while It’s Hot, The Brood (1968); Moves (1969).
In 1970, due to a back injury, he retired from dancing and became the company’s rehearsal and later stage manager. In 1972 he was invited by choreographer Robert Cohan to serve as the rehearsal manager and later as a co-artistic director in the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. During those years, he was also a guest teacher at the Stuttgart Ballet. In 1980, Romano was appointed as Batsheva’s artistic director, and served in that position for two years before moving back to London. In 1994, he returned to Israel and served as Bat-Dor’s rehearsal manager until 1999.
Over the years, Romano served in several award committees, including in the Mia Arbatova Competition and the Minister of Culture’s Dance Award. Since 1994, he has taught Sivananda Yoga and practiced Gaga regularly.
Moshe Romano died on August, 2014.
