Paul Blum was born in 1947 in New York.
He received a BA in international relations from Cornell and an MA in Chinese studies from the University of London. He studied dance in the London Contemporary Dance School (“The Place”) with Robert Cohan and others. He also studied in New York with Martha Graham, Jane Dudley and Nina Fonaroff. In 1977 he began dancing with Bat-Dor and choreographing for its studio workshops.
In 1978, Blum joined Batsheva and danced in Scenes from the Music of Charles Ives (1978); Stravinsky Dance Circus, Daughter of Shiloh, Wilderness, Swamps & Forest (1979); Images, Cantigas (1980). He also choreographed Batsheva’s dances Testimony (1981) and The Lost (1983) and served for a short while as the artistic director of Batsheva 2.
After his retirement from Batsheva, Blum went on to choreograph for companies throughout Israel. Blum teaches modern dance technique, repertoire and choreography at the Jerusalem Music and Dance Academy, where he headed the Department of Dance in 2000-5. He also taught at the MATAN Arts & Culture Project for Youth, Emek HaYarden High School and the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts.
