Peter Pucci

Dancer, choreographer

Peter Pucci was born in 1954 in Baltimore.

As a child, Pucci was a diverse sport amateur, played in a lacrosse team at high school. In 1973-75, he studied modern dance in college and later at University, between 1975 and 1977. Upon graduating, he was given a scholarship by the Dallas Ballet Academy, where he studied in 1977-78. In 1978, he moved to North Carolina where he graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts with a BFA in 1980.
Upon completing his studies in 1980, Pucci moved to New York and joined Pilobolus Dance Theatre as a dancer. A year later, he began choreographing for the company, and kept doing so until 1989. These include Day Two (1981), Carmina Burana (1984), The Vacant Chair (1986). In addition to his roles as dancer and co-choreographer in the company, he also served as its rehearsal manager. During his activity in Pilobolus, he cofounded an independent dance company together with Carol Parker, and when this was disbanded, he established another independent company under his own name, still active in the US and Europe.

Pucci choreographed for dance companies throughout the US and worldwide, including Joffrey Ballet, Alberta Ballet, and Harlem Dance Theater. He also choreographed for the opera and theater. In 1989, Pucci choreographed three dances for Batsheva: Mariachi , In the Garden, You Gotta Move.
Pucci received the University of Arizona, Tucson Award (1989), American Dance Festival Award (1990), Absolut Joffrey Award for Choreography (1992), and two Choo-San Goh Awards for Choreography (in 1993 and 1998).
