Rakefet Levy was born in 1958 in Israel.
She graduated from the Ramat Hasharon College for Art Teachers and went on to study fashion design in Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. She started her professional career as a designer for the Neve Tzedek Theater Center in 1984-85, and since then has designed costumes for a wide range of plays, dance performances, operas and other musical productions, films and TV shows, as well as presenting in museum exhibitions worldwide.
Among other things, Levy designed for Hanoch Levin’s plays Those Who Walk in the Darkness, Beheading, and Requiem, as well as for plays by Rina Yerushalmi, Ofira Henig, Yevgeny Arie, Hanan Snir, Yossi Yizraeli and others.
From 1990 till 2008, she designed for most of Ohad Narharin’s choreographies with Batsheva Company and Ensemble. For the company, she designed costumes for Black Milk (1990); Queens of Golub, Arbos (1991); Mabul, Stone Soup (1992); Opening Ceremony, Anaphase, Perpetuum (1993); Zina, Kaamos (1995); Two Short Stories (1997); Quotations 1-9, Moshe (1999); Narharin’s Virus (2001); Mamootot (2003); Three, TELOPHAZA (2005); Project 5 (2008). For the ensemble, she designed costumes for Dance Party (1994), Zachacha (1998), and Plastelina (2001).
In 2004, Levy established the Design School for the Performing Arts in Tel Aviv. She has taught in many institutes, including Shenkar College, School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem, Vital Art College in Tel Aviv, Bezalel School of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and the Kalisher Art Academy in Tel Aviv.
Levy won many awards, including the Ophir Award for 1993, 1998 and 2001, and the Israeli Theater Award for 1997 and 2000. In addition, she was a member of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation’s committee and the judge panels in the Suzanne Dellal International Dance Contest.
