Ronit Ziv was born in 1970 in Ramat Hasharon.
She played the piano as a child and began to study ballet with Marianne Rothschild. In 1982-88, she danced in the Tnuatron, directed by Dorit Shimron, and performed with it in Israel, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal. She studied in Thelma Yellin High School’s theater program, and after graduating trained for a year with Ruth Ziv Eyal. In 1989 she enlisted in the IDF and continued dancing in the company. Upon her discharge in 1991 she began studying drama at the Beit Zvi School for the Performing Arts. She left Beit Zvi after two years to start BFA in dance studies in the Kibbutzim College of Education’s honors program (1994-1998). During those years, she also studied improvisation with Arie Borstein. In 1997-99, she also studied classical ballet with Anya Brod and contemporary dance with Naomi Perlov at Bikurei Haitim Center in Tel Aviv.
Since 1998, Ziv was active as a freelance choreographer. Her first work, Rose Can’t Wait (1999) won first prize in the Shades of Dance (Gvanim Bemachol) Festival, as well as in the Jerusalem Music and Dance Academy’s Choreography Competition. Ever since then, Ziv choreographed dances staged in Israel, the US, France, Portugal, Holland, Italy and other countries. These include Punch Line (2005), Woman A/Woman B (2008), Tide (2009), and Left-Center/Curbstone (2014).
Ronit Ziv created three choreographies for Batsheva Ensemble, staged in the Curtain Up (Haramat Masach) Festival: It Will End in Tears (1999), Marilyn’s Night (2000), Torid Toridi (2001). She also choreographed for Muza, Kamea, and Galili Dance and collaborated with leading creative artists, including Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor, Ravid Dabara, and Uta Dagmar. She choreographed for Habima, Teatronetto, and Beit Zvi. In 2011-12 she was co-artistic director of Curtain Up together with Yoram Karmi.
Ziv was invited to give master classes in Russia, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and France, and was selected for the art residency program at the PACT Zollverein choreographers’ center in Essen. She also taught at Kibbutzim College, Beersheba Drama School, and Bat-Dor Beersheba, and gave choreography workshops at Jerusalem Music and Dance Academy.
Ronit Ziv won the 2002 and 2005 Minister of Education and Culture Award for young choreographers.
