Siki Kol

Dancer, choreographer, teacher

Siki Kol was born in 1951 in Israel.

Kol began studying dance at age 13. She studied at Batsheva Studio with Jeannette Ordman, and kept on studying with her when the Bat-Dor Studio was established. She later trained in the Jerusalem Music and Dance Academy. After her military service, she danced with Bat-Dor, and in 1972 she retired from dancing. At the same time, she studied creative drama in the Kibbutzim College of Education and graduated in 1973. In 1973-76 she was production manager at Bat-Dor and toured with the company in its performances around the world. Later on, she served as Bat-Dor’s rehearsal manager for about two years, and kept teaching there until 1992. In 1976-1980, she served as rehearsal manager and teacher in the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and in Moshe Efrati’s Kol Demama (“sound of silence”).

In 1980-86, under the artistic management of Moshe Romano and subsequently David Dvir, both of whom tended to support Israeli choreographers, she served as Batsheva’s rehearsal manager and resident choreographer, and created the following pieces for the company: Ties (1980); Hamsa (1981); Turmoil (1982); Night Grief (1983); A Catch and Allegro Barbaro (1984); Brandenburg Dance No. 4 (1985); Hevzek – “Hamakshiv”, Hevzek – “Vikuach”, and Story in Five Chapters (1986). She won awards for two of these choreographies: second prize at the International Choreographic Competition in Cologne. In 1981, Kol participated in the International Course for Professional Choreographers and Composers at Surrey University in England, under the artistic management of Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, Kol choreographed for additional companies, including Inbal, Bat Dor, Bikurey Mahol (“first fruits of dance”), and the Muza Dance Company in Tel Aviv. In 1984-86, she founded and headed the Tel Aviv School of the Arts’ dance program. Since 1989, she has been teaching composition and repertoire at the dance department of Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts.
Since 2002, Kol has been a member of the Public Council of Art Schools at the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport. She was also a member of the Culture Administration’s Dance Department for 10 years , as well as the judge panels of various choreography competitions (Gvanim BeMahol [Shades of Dance], Haramat Masach [Curtain Up], and more), as well as various public committees such as the International Exposure to Israeli Dance Committee.
