“Dirty work”

“Dirty work”

“I was in two different companies, a Batsheva managed by David Dvir until 1990, and a second Batsheva managed by Ohad Naharin from 1990. During the first years the young company didn’t exist, and we had to do a lot of dirty work with morning shows of a performance called Collage. The performance was a collection of Batsheva’s past works: Song of My People-Forest People-Sea, Lotte Goslar’s Clowns and Other Fools, Canonic 3/4 Studies, and more. Repertory parts with no context. After performing Collage on stage, we would have children workshops in the Jerusalem Theater foyer, and at the end of the day we would perform a complete work.

Beyond dance days, we would rehearse towards the evening shows and perform for subscribers’ series. David Dvir would bring emerging American choreographs, or purchase works by major choreographs such as Mark Morris and David Parsons. There was a specific work model that repeated itself: a successful hit, and a young experimental production. Usually the major works would remain in the repertory for a long time, whereas the experimental works would only last a small number of performances.”
