“In 1965 I started working for Batsheva as a lighting technician for Steinitz Lighting, the first stage lighting company in Israel. The lighting system, like the programs at the time, was based on Graham’s dance lighting. The first lighting designer I worked with at Batsheva was Haim Tchelet. The Company’s first shows had a small audience because modern dance was hard to digest in those days. We were asked to invite to performances anybody we knew, as long the Ohal Shem Hall wouldn’t be empty. But, from the first moment it was clear that for the Batsheva Company, professionalism was above everything else. It was evident in the stage designers’ choice, Dani Karavan for example, the musicians, such as Noam Shariff, and the state-of-the-art lighting equipment that arrived straight from New York. After a short while, I started Danor and worked with the Company as a lighting designer for many years.”
