“Just the beginning”

“Just the beginning”

“In 1989 we were an anonymous rock band, collecting material for the first record, playing as the opening act for Fortisakharof at ‘Allenby’ club. After a couple of days somebody from Batsheva called, and scheduled us a meeting with Shelly Sheer, who told us Moshe Fried, her husband, a lighting technician, had seen us at ‘Allenby’, and that they were looking for a rock band to cooperate with a choreographer who’d shortly arrive to Batsheva. We met with Ohad and talked about Butoh and dance. A little while earlier I saw the Sankai Juku dancers suspend on ropes on the Tel Aviv museum wall, and to me the Butoh expressed a deep allusion of the body to space, which is very significant for musicians.

In the contract we were signed for 17 performances. In the first 13 there were 20 people in the audience, and some left in the middle. In the 14th which was a Friday matinee, the hall was suddenly crowded, and after that all the performances were sold out. I was sorry there wouldn’t be any more shows, but Gadi Glick told me: ‘don’t worry, this is just the beginning, your kids will see it’. And really, my kids saw it too.”
